Ramadan

Fidye

Fidye is paid by people who are permanently unable to fast during Ramadan, for example because of an illness or their age. For each missed day of fasting, a person in need receives a meal.

What it's about

What is Fidye?

Ramadan is a time of reflection, prayer and community. But not everyone is physically able to fast. For people who are permanently unable to fast because of their health or age, Islam provides the Fidye. Instead of fasting, they donate money so that a person in need receives a meal. This applies to every day of Ramadan on which fasting is not possible.

But for those who can only manage it with great difficulty, a compensation is prescribed: feeding a person in need.

Surah al-Baqarah, 2:184
